The UK’s Fairtrade Fortnight takes place from 22 February until the 7 March 2010.
This year’s theme is ‘The Big Swap’ and if you are planning to take part, why not visit, the first village in the UK ever to gain Fairtrade status?
Howarth, in the south Pennines, is an attractive, busy village with plenty of events going on throughout the year. The village gained Fairtrade status in 2002 and since then has marked Fairtrade Fortnight with memorable events.
Most of the shops sell some Fairtrade products and the cafés, restaurants, tea-rooms and B&Bs all use Fairtrade products.
This year Haworth is holding a Tea Dance where everyone is welcome to dance or just listen to the Palm Court Orchestra whilst enjoying Fairtrade sandwiches, cakes and tea.
‘The Big Swap’ is organised by The Fairtrade Foundation, which is encouraging the nation to swap their usual foodstuffs for Fairtrade items. The Fairtrade Foundation is aiming for one million and one swaps and each swap will be proof that the UK wants developing world producers to get a better deal.
If you plan to visit Haworth during Fairtrade Fortnight, the nearby Town of Hebden Bridge is a must-see, and offers luxurious 4-Star B & B accommodation at its recently converted former Mill in the town centre.
