They can be found in office buildings, in homes, and just about anywhere that humans frequent. However, there is more to them than simply being something to use as a mechanism for opening or closing something. For people who like to include creativity in their life, they can also be used as a form of expression, of art. In some cases, door handles can even be used in ways that perhaps they were not originally meant for.

Door handles can be used to express human emotion. If you or anybody you know has ever experienced anger, you have likely looked for ways to express it without striking somebody. A common choice for teenagers, grabbing a door handle and thrusting it is a quick way to get a door to slam. The loud impact can be heard by all in the area, and the message is definitely able to get across. Thankfully, the door handle is not usually damaged in these situations, and can be used again and again.

Another creative use for door handles is medical procedures that are not very sound. It is not recommended by any dentist or medical practitioner, but some people believe that they can remove loose teeth in a special manner; by attaching the tooth to the door handle by way of a connecting string, this can supposedly save the family a trip to the dentist. The tooth is removed by slamming the door shut, forcing the tooth out of the mouth from the impact. Most cases have been shown by way of television shows or movies. The amount of people who try this in real life is not known.

Yet another way door handles can be used for more than simply opening and closing doors is for dramatic purposes. If you have ever watched a scary movie, there is probably at least one scene where a door handle is used; as the scared individual stares at the door, the door handle is slowly turned, indicating that trouble is on the way. This can also be used to mean that time is running out, and a group of people doing something suspicious are about to be caught. This plot device is quite popular, and does not show signs of waning anytime soon.

The handles of doors are something that society could hardly do without, no matter what the decade or century; wherever there are doors and people who need to use them, so will door handles be present. Although they were meant for a single purpose, over the years they have come to be used for a lot more. Creative individuals, be they average people or those in the entertainment industry, have found many more uses. What uses may be discovered in the future has yet to come about, but some likely look forward to it.
